Defect Structure
and Phase Transformations of Nb- and Ti-based Binary Laves
Phases

The project at the MPI-MF is concerned with defect structure and
phase transformations in Laves phases as well as their
interplay. The occurrence and structure of defects, e.g.
constitutional and thermal point defects as well as stacking
faults will be examined on the basis of advanced (mainly
powder-)diffraction methods accompanied by further appropriate
experimental techniques. Phase transformations between different
Laves-phase polytypes will be studied by tracing the
crystal-structure and microstructural changes by powder
diffraction and metallography on alloys subjected to specially
targeted heat treatment programs in order to devise experiments
for a quantitative study of the kinetics of the transformation.
These can be performed by diffraction methods, but also by
thermal analysis or by dilatometry as fast in-situ methods. It
will be attempted to describe the phase-transformation kinetics
by appropriate models taking into account the knowledge about
the defects, which definitely will play a decisive role in the
phase-transformation kinetics.
