Structure, Disorder and Bonding of Nb-TM Laves Phases with TM = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co
Y. Grin, A. Ormeci, D. Grüner, and G. Kreiner

The binary alloy systems Nb-TM with TM = Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co will be investigated exemplary to study the nature of transition metal based Laves phases. The primary objective is to understand the phase stability and the properties of the Laves phases with respect to the real structure ranging from atomic to mesoscopic phenomena. To provide a basis for quantum mechanical and thermodynamic modelling of the Laves phases the materials preparation is followed by the determination of precise constitutional and structural data as well as measurements of electronic and mechanical properties. The results will then serve as a knowledge base to enhance or to develop new concepts to predict structure, bonding and properties of ternary Laves phases. To achieve the scientific objectives special topics of the research program will be investigated in close collaboration with the following Max Planck Institutes: Festkörperforschung (synthesis and bonding), Eisenforschung (properties and thermodynamic modelling), and Metallforschung (crystal structure and disorder).
